SABR 201 - Should we non-sac bunt more? (July 10, 2003)

Ideally, I'd like to see the Bonds and Palmeiro-type hitters bunt to 3rd just to keep the defense honest. It's probably too much of an ego and "unwritten" rule issue for those two to do it though.

  Interesting stuff, MGL.

Believe it or not, but the media and most fans in Arizona talk about Steve Finley like he's the second coming in CF.

I like the "inner circle" idea.

I'd definitely support a HOF decision to make formal distinctions between a Ted Williams and a Kirby Puckett.

  Very solid analysis.

I'm not as optimistic about Arizona's chances in 2004:

- Luis Gonzalez is playing despite the fact that he needs surgery on his throwing arm; he may last the season or he may be finished tomorrow - I don't have much faith in the former for an outfielder of his age

- the D-Backs are already unable to field three good outfielders and if Gonzalez goes down, it's going to be ugly out there

- After Johnson and Webb, who are both huge question marks, the rotation listed looks awful; I'm not familiar with Fossum, but his numbers and projections are not impressive

- Arizona has quite a few good-looking young arms in MLB/AAA limbo who should be given a shot; Dessens and Reynolds need to pitch as few innings as possible

- Dudek is right about the bullpen; Villarreal, for one, is too good to waste there and Brenly seems determined to underutilize him

- the infield defense is going to be bad; hopefully, Cintron can pick up some slack from Hillenbrand, but I don't think that there is anything that can be done about the right side - these guys are going to hurt Webb the most

  Interesting piece.

Eddie Rodriguez, the D-Backs' recently fired 3rd base coach, had a reputation as being a "waver," too. Apparently, it was well-deserved despite Brenly's recent claims that every single batter was "just slow out of the box and needed to hustle."

Christ, that Jeter contract is beyond a nightmare.

Is there a similar list available for deferred contracts?

How many high leverage innings has Rivera thrown in his career? How does that compare to the HOF-caliber starters of his era? The best non-HOF starters?

tango, forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but have you run any correlations to see what impact, if any, a player's offense has on the fans' rating of his defense?
